Who We Are
Tobacco-Free Onondaga County (TFOC) is a New York State funded program administered by the Onondaga County Health Department. Tobacco-Free Onondaga County works in the Onondaga county community to strengthen tobacco-related policies to prevent and reduce tobacco use and limit opportunities for exposure to secondhand smoke. TFOC policy change initiatives are prescribed by the funding agency, the New York State Tobacco Control Program.
Our Goals:
- eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke
- decreasing the social acceptability of tobacco use
- promoting cessation from tobacco use
- preventing the initiation of tobacco use among youth and young adults
- contributing to the science of tobacco control
TFOC Initiatives:
Tobacco-Free Onondaga County directs numerous evidenced-based initiatives focused on changing social norms around tobacco use in Onondaga County. These include:
- Point of Purchase: Retailers reduce the amount of tobacco advertising in the retail environment.
- “No Thanks Big Tobacco”: Community organizations and events adopt policies prohibiting the acceptance of tobacco company advertising, sponsorship and promotion.
- Tobacco-Free/Smoke-Free Outdoors: Community Business and organizations prohibit tobacco use in outdoor areas, including public parks, playgrounds, campuses and in proximity to building entryways.
- Tobacco-Free Parks and Playgrounds: Municipal and private parks and playgrounds prohibit tobacco use on their grounds.
- Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Dwellings: Apartment complexes, senior living homes and other multi-unit dwellings prohibit the use of tobacco in their buildings.
- Village and Town Point of Purchase Resolutions: Village and town boards pass a resolution calling on their local retailers to reduce or eliminate tobacco advertising in stores. The resolution also encourages law enforcement agencies to take appropriate measures to ensure all local, state, and federal laws regarding advertising and placement of tobacco signage and advertising are being observed.

Community involvement is crucial for the success of tobacco use prevention and cessation. Policy change has proven to reduce the rates of smoking adults in Onondaga county. We encourage you to take an active role in shaping our local efforts.
